Yep, that was the next destination on the bucket list. My travel buddies all agreed after our last trip to Ireland. Now we had 2 years to plan, save and make things happen. Well that was the plan anyway. Cut to 2 years later and the planning and saving didn't quite happen the way any of us thought we would.
The first year after our Ireland trip we spend all summer daydreaming about where we would go and what we would do. I even went so far as to buy the Rosetta Stone to learn some German before we went. Now I started out all in with the language thing. I made a whole deck of flash cards that I was getting good at. Ms. B had even agreed that we would do "German Sundays" where we would make a German meal and try to speak mostly if nothing but German through the night. Alas, life happens and German Sundays never did. You see life hit my travel friends and I squarely in the throat.
First life event that happened was my friend and roommate was commuting over an hour each way to work. I'm thinking she got a bit tired of that drive, plus she wanted to be closer to her family that lives in the state. As a result she started searching for a house of her own and ended up finding one all the way out in another state. OK well not really, but its far enough away that its not close enough for daily visits or nights out on the town. At any rate as if purchasing a new home and all the accouterments that go along with it weren't enough of a savings drain, then there is the fact that she found herself in a position where she had to look for a new job. That's right, after moving closer to work she had to find a new job after all. Ain't life grand. So fiscally and new job wise one of the travel friends has been nixed.
Second life event that has since occurred. K&K, my friend's daughter and her boyfriend. Well after we got home from Ireland they both got serious about their college studies and their life together over all. They are not only working hard and studying hard but they have now moved out of their "kid" apartment that they shared with friends and moved into a nicer location by themselves. Yep you guessed it, another two peeps nixed for fiscal reasons.
Third life event that has modified plans. Ms. B. Yep that's right she is a life event all her own. In fact it is her life event has altered Mr. J's. OK so you see she has always said that as soon as her youngest graduated from HS she was going to move or do something different with her life that she always wanted to do. As it turns out her youngest graduated just last year. Ms B then promptly started to move her daydream of teaching abroad more to her front burner. Anyone who has met her knows she is an awesome teacher and that she is totally dedicated to her students. To make a super long story short, I'll just say that now the UAE knows that too. That's right, she has picked up and moved herself all the way out to the Middle East to combine her love of travel and teaching. Now her man friend and our partner in travel will be headed out of country with her over the holidays instead of heading to Germany with our crew.
So lets recap. After Ireland all of us on the trip agreed we needed to make plans to travel overseas together again. That original group was Ms. B, Mr. J, K&K and Ms. T. If you are following along that group now consists of myself and Ms. B.
Hurdles my friends, life always likes to throw hurdles in your way. You just have to decide if you are going to clear them or dust yourself off and try again if you end up running smack dab into the center of them.
Don't fret, I may not have the body of a track star, but by all that is holy I am leaping over these hurdles! In fact, Ms. B has made some new friends on her adventure that will be joining us. I have yet to meet them but I'm sure Ms. S and Mr. D will become fast friends. So the trip is on!
More to come my friends, more to come.
